Plant Description and Operating Era
The Berlin NJ Kaylo plant was one of Owens-Corning’s East Coast asbestos-cement pipe insulation production and shipping sites. It operated as a dedicated Kaylo-10 pipe-covering and block manufacturing facility, supplying the Northeast industrial, shipyard, and commercial construction markets during the peak asbestos-Kaylo era through the alleged 1972 asbestos phase-out. The plant handled raw chrysotile asbestos fiber shipments and finished Kaylo product warehousing on site.

- Chrysotile-asbestos fiber receiving, milling, and blending during Kaylo asbestos-cement pipe insulation production
- Asbestos-fiber-and-hydrous-calcium-silicate slurry mixing, molding, and autoclave curing
- Kaylo block cutting, trimming, and finishing generating airborne asbestos dust
- Kaylo shipping and warehousing — packaging plants handled finished asbestos-cement pipe insulation
- Asbestos pipe covering on production steam lines and utility piping throughout the plant
- Asbestos sheet gaskets at process piping and autoclave flanges
- Asbestos sprayed fireproofing on structural steel (pre-1973 EPA ban)
Workers Exposed
Plaintiffs allegedly worked at the Berlin Kaylo plant in trades including HFIAW Insulators (product handling and installation), Kaylo mill workers (asbestos milling and mixing), Kaylo autoclave operators, shipping and receiving workers, maintenance mechanics, UA Pipefitters, and plant electricians (IBEW).
