Plant Description and Operating Era
The Skillman NJ Research Center allegedly served as Johnson & Johnson’s principal consumer-products and pharmaceutical R&D campus, hosting research laboratories, pilot-scale process development, analytical chemistry, quality-control, and product-formulation groups. The site supported development work on cosmetic-talc products (Johnson’s Baby Powder, Shower to Shower), skin-care, oral-care, wound-care, and OTC pharmaceutical formulations. Skillman operated from the mid-twentieth century through subsequent J&J corporate reorganizations and has since been consolidated / redeveloped under successor J&J campus planning.
Premises ACM Narrative
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that pre-1980 Skillman premises involved asbestos through:
- Asbestos pipe covering on pharmaceutical steam sterilizer feeds, IV solution manufacturing lines, and utility piping
- Asbestos sheet gaskets at autoclave, sterilizer, and process-piping flanges
- Asbestos-block insulation on cold-chain refrigeration equipment
- Asbestos sprayed fireproofing on structural steel (pre-1973 EPA ban)
- Asbestos-cement roofing and asbestos-cement bulkhead panels
- Talc processing (pilot / R&D): airborne tremolite/anthophyllite/chrysotile asbestos allegedly contaminated cosmetic talc through the Vermont / Italian / Chinese talc supply chain during pilot-scale talc handling, formulation development, and cosmetic-grade blending trials. Plaintiffs alleged that talc-contamination exposure affected pilot-plant operators, cosmetic-grade blenders, and quality control laboratory technicians at Skillman R&D operations.

HFIAW Insulators, UA Pipefitters, BAC Bricklayers (on boiler house rebuilds), IBEW Electricians, Millwrights, pharmaceutical production workers, talc mill / pilot workers, QC laboratory technicians, and sterilizer operators allegedly worked around asbestos-containing materials at the Skillman Research Center.
